Apicoectomy Retreatment At North Pacific Endodontics
At North Pacific Endodontics, we understand that some dental situations may require more than a standard root canal to save a tooth with infected pulp. That's where apicoectomy comes in—a surgical procedure, also known as endodontic surgery, that could be the ideal solution for you! We take pride in offering apicoectomy services in Alaska, providing advanced and specialized care to address your unique dental needs.
WHY WOULD I NEED ENDODONTIC SURGERY?
Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and Drs. Jeppson, Baker or Sharp will recommend surgery. Endodontic surgery can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.
WHAT IS AN APICOECTOMY?
The video above illustrates this simple procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root and the gum is sutured. The bone naturally heals around the root over a period of months restoring full function.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER AN APICOECTOMY?
Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.

They were super accommodating to my traveling out of area and fit me in their schedule. The time and care they took completing my root canal was excellent. Dr. Jeppson was thorough in explaining process and reviewing my X-rays with me. I appreciate the time he spent.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Glen Nielsen2024-03-26From my first appointment to discuss possible courses of action, to the day of the procedure itself, I was struck by the personable, professional arttention I received. I received a personalized treatment plan with potential costs, both out of pocket and those covered by insurance. The day of the procedure went remarkably smoothly. Everything was on time, care was taken to explain the processes prior and during the procedure. I was never in any pain or discomfort. My post procedure treatment was explaind to me and I received post therapy instructions to take home with me. I jokingly shared with the Dr. Baker that I'd give them 10 out of 10 - "Would recommend", and that ended up being the truth.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.HB Kitty2024-01-16I met Dr. Sharp in November after being referred to him for a root canal that needed to be redone from 15 years ago. I was scared and in pain from my tooth being infected and really not knowing what was going to happen with my tooth. Dr. Sharp made me feel very comfortable and really explained the entire process and treatment and did an amazing job taking great care of me. A month later in December I had a different tooth giving me pain, after seeing my dentist that told me it was broken and needed to be extracted I called Dr. Sharp. Here it was later in the day on a Friday and Dr. Sharp not only picked up the phone to talk with me but he and his team got me in to look at my tooth that same afternoon. I wanted his professional opinion and what he would do if this was his tooth, the bottom line is I am terrified of the dentist but I really trust him. I went to see the oral surgeon in January that Dr. Sharp recommended and had my tooth extracted. Thank you Dr. SharpTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Holly Anderson2023-10-18Very welcoming and friendly staff. Clean and comfortable facility. My 17-year-old son had to have a root canal. They explained everything very thoroughly. Dr. Baker and his assistant Morgan have a great bedside manner. My son said it actually went way better than he thought it would, he was nervous to have a root canal done for the first time. The whole experience was very pleasant. Would highly recommend.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Beth Springer2023-10-12My visit went well.
